Question about Hyperthyroidism

by piscesboy <oraclmaster@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Aug 26, 2008 at 02:43 PM

I know this is a diabetes group, but I'm hoping that somebody here may
be able to point me to some advice.

I think I may have a mild form of hyperthyroidism, which is where your
thyroid gland produces too much T3 and T4 hormones and causes your
metabolism to speed up. I was trying to lose weight recently and
changed my diet. I began eating a lot of yogurt and milk and
strawberries all mixed together in smoothie drinks in order to try to
lose weight. I also started eating less and exercising. After several
days of this diet, I noticed I was losing weight and sweating without
any effort. I had trouble sleeping, and it felt as if the area under
my larynx, where the thyroid gland is located started feeling warm and
slightly sore as if it were overly active.

I looked up my symptoms online and found they were nearly a perfect
match for hyperthyroidism. I also noticed that many of the foods I had
been eating in combination are high in iodine content (strawberries,
yogurt, milk, mozzarella cheese), which is a cause for
hyperthyroidism, so I cut those out of my diet and have been feeling
better although the symptoms haven't completely gone away. I've gained
back several pounds, but not yet to the point I was before. It's only
been a few days since I cut those items from my diet, however.

What I want to know is should I be worried and see a doctor about this
or should I continue on my diet for a while and wait for the symptoms
to naturally subside? Has anyone had experience here and know how long
this is expected to last? I have not had symptoms of hyperthyroidism
prior to that change in diet, so I am pretty sure that is the cause of
it. I want to try a wait and see approach for a few days to see if it
goes away naturally but I want some information to see if this is the
best course of action.

Thanks.
