Hi Helen,

Having all data stored in a database, like DiVa does, imposes some
severe limitations on the total amount of data one can store. I
believe the limit for the one supplied with DiVa is 5GB (I could be
wrong here, but the exact number's pretty meaningless anyway). It's
therefore im****tant to ex****t your experiments and remove them from
the DB as soon as possible, especially the ones containing large
datasets.

The other data limitation we've come across ourselves is a problem
with the error log size. DiVa stores all internal error messages etc.
in a plain text log file, as do many other apps. Problem here is that
it generates LOTS of messages and keeps appending to the same file
without ever checking or reducing the size (i.e. by removing the
oldest ones). Windows can only handle file sizes up to a Gig or so,
and things start behaving oddly when you keep appending to files that
large - including DiVa itself, even though there's nothing really
wrong with that application itself.
I'd therefore recommend you check the size of the error log, and
remove it or rename it to something other. There's no risk involved;
DiVa will just generate a minty fresh new error log if the old one is
missing (or renamed). I attached a poster I made which is stuck to our
HP workstation which explains the procedure. We don't do that manually
any more though, as I have Windows run a little .bat file which does
this automatically every time the computer (re)starts.

Hope this helps,

Guy

Subject: DiVa software problems

Dear FLOWers,

We have been experiencing major problems with the DiVa software we use
on our LSRII. We also have some problems with our Aria that we would
like to know if anyone else has experienced, as we are not sure if
they
are related to the software or not.

We initially saw the problems using DiVa v5.0 and hoped that the new
DiVa v6.1.1. would fix the problems, but it hasn=E2=80=99t.

LSRII
1. During acquisition some or all of the dot plots are empty. When the
sample acquisition is complete, and the file has been saved, then the
data is displayed as normal. Obviously this is far from ideal since
you
need to be able to see if your sample during acquisition in case there
are any problems.
2. Some people have also run a set of samples and then gone back to
find
that the saved files are no longer there.
3. Since DiVa v6.1.1 was installed, they have also seen that the
machine
does not stop acquiring when it should.

ARIA
The software fails to respond when we click on unload, acquire, sort
etc. The only way out of this, is to force quit and restart the
software. We have wasted huge amounts of time during sorts messing
about
with this, as you have to wait for the stream to stabilize etc. We
have
also lost some samples because even though you have clicked to stop
acquiring, it doesn=E2=80=99t always actually stop.

Has anyone experienced any of the same problems and if so, how did you
fix it? Is it possible that it is related to the number of experiments
in the DiVa software, I know there is a limit to how much data you can
acquire into a single =E2=80=98Experiment=E2=80=99, but does the number of
separate
experiments affect the performance of the software?

Any help/input will be hugely appreciated.

Best wishes
Helen
