Dear All,
the question on whether messages from companies are of commercial/
non-
commercial or promotional/non-promotional nature has been discussed
quite oftenly in the past years at this forum. The borderline is
very
thin, anyhow.
Therefore, a mail notifying for example that a scientist who is well
known since years in the flow scene has changed his position from an
academic institution to a company or between companies seems to be
justified while the same information eventually may be regarded by
others as commercial mail. The information on new products is
clearly
commercial but can be valuable to many people. Or what about a
company
announcing in this mailing list a sponsor award for winning a travel
to the next ISAC Congress in Budapest - for sure that majority would
categorize such a mail as commercial. Anyhow, there should also be
some room to tell the forum that such a prize can be won and that
someone can have a benefit. Another case: in the mail signature of a
non-commercial mail, a link to a company newsletter is given, e.g.
<<
Partec Newsletter:
http://newsletter.partec.com/ov?mailing=3D17I60R3-DAOZSO
>> - of course this mail then has clearly commercial components,
and
alone the fact that for discussing this I am using here on purpose
an
established weblink makes this mail with non-commercial background
at
the same moment somehow commercial. It could also be discussed
whether
for example small start-ups may get a chance to transmit news on
highly interesting innovations to the scene while multi-billion USD
companies will anyhow reach everyone in their marketing, also
without
(mis)using this list - especially knowing that inventions mainly
come
from smaller companies which in many cases are than bought by the
larger ones. So, who wants to judge all these cases.
In order to avoid that this issue is being regularly discussed again
in detail, it could be worth to consider installing an easy tool for
this mailing list which may satisfy most of the forum members: One
possibilty would be that commercial entities filing a mail to the
list
(a mail which potentitally could create discussions about a
commercial/
non-commercial background) could actively include a fixed starting
term in the mail header which would identify the mail as originating
from a company. So, my mail could show a header like for example:
[Company:] Cytometry Mailing List and Messages from Companies
By this way, each individual of this forum could decide on his own
whether or whether not to set up an easy filter in his mail
programme
using the added term/word which would separate the mails sent to
this
list into different mail folders.
Without doubts, there could be better ideas, but this question
should
be left to all forum members and the forum managers.
When looking through the many, many mails in the past months, it
anyhow seems that since a while a significantly increasing
discipline
from all companies can be acknowledged to respect this mailing list
as
a valuable tool for members to exchange needful information,
scientific and technical matters, questions on application issues
and
answers to problems.
Kind regards
Roland
