GSK has defended the safety record of its HIV drug abacavir following
a re****t published in this week’s edition of the Lancet, which
suggests use of the drug could increase the risk of heart attacks.
The study, conducted by the Data Collection on Adverse Events of
Anti-HIV Drugs (D:A:D), tested five drugs and concluded that whilst
the majority were not linked with increased risk of heart attack,
GSK’s product could almost double the risk.
In response, GSK said it had conducted trials with more than 9,600
patients and that “no increased risk of heart attack associated with
abacavir was found.”

GlaxoSmithKline admits that abacavir causes an array of other side
effects:
"Serious and sometimes fatal hypersensitivity reactions have been
associated with ZIAGEN (abacavir sulfate). Hypersensitivity to
abacavir is a multi-organ clinical syndrome usually characterized by a
sign or symptom in 2 or more of the following groups: (1) fever, (2)
rash, (3) gastrointestinal (including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or
abdominal pain), (4) constitutional (including generalized malaise,
fatigue, or achiness), and (5) respiratory (including dyspnea, cough,
or pharyngitis)."
And, of course, surprise, surprise,

"Abacavir may cause serious liver damage and a blood condition called
lactic acidosis."
