I nursed for 18 months, but had to stop because of IVF meds. Otherwise I'd
have kept going until she wanted to stop. I slowed down to get my period
back, so was nursing 3 x daily at 12 months, and would have liked to have
kept that frequency up longer. Generally I tried to fit b/fing around our
lifestyle. She has never had formula and didnt like bottles anyway, so she
was breastmilk only until she had cowsmilk in her cereal at 9 months. Then
at 12 months I started letting her have a glass of milk at lunch to get
her
used to it, but letting her b/f as well if she wanted until I cut that
feed
out, too. She was on morning and night until I started seeing my IF Dr
again, and he said I might have to stop b/f so that I could ovulate. So I
cut back to one feed, but was reluctant to quit entirely. I fed her
through
three IUIs, and eventually stopped to do IVF. The drugs just werent tested
in b/fing mothers, and I wasnt going to risk HER fertility.
I would never have dropped to one feed so soon. Morning and night would
have
been kept up until 2 years at least if I could have kept going. I was sad
to
have stopped but knew in the long run a smaller gap between siblings would
be better than another 6 months of breastfeeding... for my family, at
least.
Next time I'll feed for 2 years minimum like the WHO recommends. We'll see
where that takes us.
If you are cycling regularly, I wouldnt see the need to cut down. I cut
down
because I wasnt even getting a period. It came back on her 1st birthday
(exactly!), and was still irregular, so cutting down to two feeds made
sense. But I wouldnt have done it so soon if I didnt have to.
Hugs,
Jade.
