When we were looking into International adoption, India had peaked our
interest, but we were told that the wait is long for non-Indian couples,
preference is given to Indians. I watch "Adoption Story" on Discovery
Health occasionally, and one was about a first-generation American couple
of
Indian decent who adopted from India. It did touch on the caste system,
and
how initially the families were taken aback by the adoption, because in
India adoption is usually done within the family. Family members actually
offered to have a baby for the couple! But once the child was home,
everyone accepted her.
