This months column is going to focus on the work of Dr. Natasha
Campbell-McBride. Her new book 'Gut and Psychology Syndrome =96 Natural
treatment for Autism, Dyspraxia, ADD, Dyslexia, ADHD, Depression and
Schizophrenia' is set to become a bestseller for parents who have
children with any of these conditions. I saw her do a short talk at a
nutrition conference where she was involved in the launch of a new
advanced probiotic formula to the UK market (see bottom of page). As a
parent of a child diagnosed with learning disabilities, she has become
acutely aware of the difficulties facing other parents like her, and
she has been devoting her time to these families through The Cambridge
Nutrition Clinic since 1998.
=93The child's digestive system holds the key to the child's mental
development=94.
According to McBride, The underlying issue, which can manifest itself
in different children with different combinations, resides in the gut.
So disorders such as autism, ADHD, dyspraxia, dyslexia, ADD, allergies
and eczema are what Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride calls 'Gut &
Psychology Syndrome' or 'GAP Syndrome'. There is also another group
under the same umbrella: Schizophrenia, depression, manic depression
(bi-polar disorder) and obsessive compulsive disorder. The book
describes the way she has developed her treatments with the underlying
focus on the gut-brain connection. By looking at all these disorders
and noticing that virtually all her clients also had digestive
abnormalities, she discovered the connection. Father of modern
psychiatry, French psychiatrist Phillipe Pinel (1745 =96 1828) wrote in
1807 that =93The primary seat of insanity is in the region of the
stomach and intestines=94.
Digestion problems often start when weaning or when breast feeding is
stopped and infant formula has begun. These changes are mainly
remembered in the second year, but parents often recall colic,
vomiting (reflux) and other digestive symptoms from an earlier period.
Early bloating and flatulence can cause severe pain in children, but
is often not noticed or communicated especially by autistic children
who seem to develop self-puni****ng habits as a reaction to the
discomfort.
By looking at how the immune system becomes compromised with
vaccinations and to the ignorant dietary habits based upon sugar and
refined flours, the book encapsulates a stunning and convincing theory
of why many of these disorders are manifesting in modern society. By
looking at the bigger picture it is clear that eating habits, farming
methods and lifestyle changes over the last few decades are behind the
cause of many mental disorders and learning difficulties.
Allergens in wheat and dairy are contenders for the 'worst' food we
can eat because of the way that they get through the gut wall and into
the bloodstream, especially if the gut flora is not able to do its
job. These allergens are often found in these children and are linked
to poor brain and immune functioning and are a precursor to many of
these issues.
Beneficial bacteria in the gut has many im****tant roles. It maintains
the health and integrity of the gut, protects from unwanted bacterial
invaders, modulates the immune system and helps deal with toxins and
heavy metals. If it is not in a good balance, the problems start to
occur. Antibiotics, drugs, the contraceptive pill, sugar, refined
foods, pollution, dental work, alcohol, disease and bottle feeding are
all responsible for damaging gut flora.
In the 1960's and 70's breast feeding was unfa****onable and many
children have had to suffer the consequences. Breast feeding
establishes gut flora for life and enhances the immune system to a
high degree. Babies are born with a sterile gut, so breast-feeding is
the natural way for the gut to become populated with the best bacteria
in the correct amounts. Bottle-fed babies guts are populated by
unnatural bacteria in the wrong amounts which can lead to digestive
issues later in life.
Beneficial bacteria in the gut produces essential nutrients such as
vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B12, Biotin and Vitamin K. It also keeps the
gut wall strong so allergens cannot get through and it helps nutrient
absorption from foods and supplements. Many people who take
supplements cannot absorb them because of gut flora abnormalities. The
im****tance of probiotics in McBride's research is overwhelming. This
is why she helped develop a supplement that was able to help with
these conditions. She told us "Probiotic bacteria are essential in
order to help people with all sorts of health problems: children with
learning disabilities, adults with depression and other psychological
conditions, people with digestive and immune system disorders,
patients with ME, chronic fatigue syndrome, Fibromyalgia, MS and other
neurological conditions. The list can go on. I see excellent results
in my clinic every day."
This new supplement contains a staggering 2.88 billion viable* cells
per capsule. Thats 8 billion per gram. The ingredients include five
strains of beneficial bacteria =96 L.Acidophilus, L. Plantarum, L.
Rhamnosus, B. Bifidum and B. Longum. It also contains Saccharomyces
boulardii - this yeast strain can help keep the digestive tract clear
and is particularly beneficial to sufferers of diarrhoea and candida..
L-glutamine - an amino acid that helps protect the gastrointestinal
tract and is the perfect accompaniment to probiotic cultures.
