Maddy, thanks for the explanation. Let me bottom line it for you. What
they taught you is completely unnecessary to begin doing Reiki. That
does not mean that the ritual is useless or has no purpose. But
without any preparation whatsoever, you can place your hands on a
person and the reiki will start flowing. Or if you are doing distant
reiki, you can just draw the symbols (intending that reiki be flowing
at the same time). So, as long as you feel the reiki flowing, you're
good to go.

That said, what *is* the purpose of the little ritual, you may ask? I
can see several. You can never go wrong giving thanks, and you can
never give too many thanks (unless you're holding up everyone from
eating Thanksgiving dinner), and being grateful puts you in a good
space, mentally and spiritually. Raising your hands up over your head
in the v-shaped cup in a receiving position is a good way for many
people to get the feeling of ki flowing. So for a beginner, this might
be a very useful ritual. But at some point it will become so natural
to get the reiki going that it won't be necessary to have a special
ritual and it will just be instant on at need.

Love and Light,

Garry
